How To Flash Custom Recovery Image To Install Custom ROMs, Backup / Restore

If you are new with the term Root, you should check our guide on What is Root? If you are looking for tools to root your device you can refer to our guide on how to Root Qualcomm Chipset device or How to Root Mediatek / Qualcomm Devices.

Next step after rooting your device is to install a Custom Recovery. Without Custom Recovery you will not be able to Backup / Restore or Flash any Custom ROMs on your device.

There are two reputed recoveries available for Android phones: CWM (ClockWork Mod) and TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project). Both these recoveries are well developed and updated regularly. There are many other third party recoveries, but are not advisable to install.

Before moving forward to install Custom Recovery, you should choose which one you should go for; CWM or TWRP. I would bet my money on TWRP, that’s because of its user interface and advanced backup option. TWRP lets you backup EFS partition, this partition contains information of your IMEI and other needful information.

I had once installed a Custom ROM and EFS partition was deleted, as a result there was no SIM being detected and i had to search a way around to get it back. Conclusion, go for TWRP recovery if you want to have safe and secure backup.

Now that we have finalized our Recovery, next step is to look for compatible version of TWRP with your device. Not all recovery versions are compatible with all devices. So check from this list if your device is supported. If you did not find your device there, you can search on for thrid party recoveries.

Assuming that you have found the recovery, now we can start the tutorial. Make sure you have copied the recovery file on SD card.
